Knox (spr. nox), John, Reformator Schottlands, geb. 1505 zu Giffordgate bei Haddington, wandte sich als Priester seit 1547 der Reformation zu, war 1547-49 in franz. Kriegsgefangenschaft, floh bei Marias der Katholischen Regierungsantritt (1554) nach Genf, wurde Schüler Calvins, übersetzte das. die Bibel, bewirkte, 1559 nach Schottland zurückgekehrt, durch einen Volksaufstand die Einführung der Presbyterialkirche in Schottland (1560), seit 1560 Pfarrer in Edinburgh, betrieb als Gegner der Maria Stuart deren Absetzung; gest. 24.
